Brick Wall Starter Kit for New Walls

A wall starter kit is used when a new wall needs to be connected to an existing wall without cutting out masonry. The stainless steel starter strips are fixed vertically to the existing structure, then the wall starter ties are slotted into the strip and built into the mortar joints of the new wall.

The adjustable tie system allows the ties to move up or down within the starter strip, helping them align with the brick or block coursing on site. This makes the Catnic wall starter kit suitable for a range of masonry wall starter applications.

Internal Wall Installation

For internal wall construction, line up the wall starter kit with the centre line of the new wall and ensure it is plumb. Fixing positions for the coach screws should avoid mortar joints wherever possible.

Use a 10mm masonry drill bit, insert the plugs, then fix the lower starter strip first without overtightening the screws. Offer up the upper starter strip, mark the fixing points, and repeat the process for the upper section.

External Wall Installation

For external cavity wall construction, a wall starter kit should be used for both the internal and external leaves. The bottom end of the wall starter kit must be positioned above the damp-proof course.

Outer leaf vertical joints between the new and existing walls should be weather-sealed with a proprietary sealing strip or suitable polymer-based sealant. In exposed or maritime locations, additional damp-proofing measures may be required, so check whether a vertical DPM is needed for the project.

Wall Starter Ties

The supplied wall starter ties slot into the starter strip and can be adjusted up or down to suit the coursing. The twist-and-lock system holds the ties securely in place, helping create a positive connection between the existing masonry and the new wall.

The wall starter ties should be laid onto a full bed of mortar and fully covered within the mortar joint.

Before ordering, check the wall thickness, wall type, internal or external application, damp-proofing requirements and any engineer, architect, building control or warranty-provider requirements. For external cavity wall construction, remember that two wall starter kits may be required: one for each leaf.
